In recent years Bulgaria has experienced a fast economic growth. In 2011 GDP grew approximately 2.2%.

In 2011, 1.7 billion Leva were allocated from the budget of the Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works and from EU funds for construction. These funds are twice more compared to the peak of construction in 2008, when the business had over 900 million Leva from the budget.

Based on data from the Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works, 9 schemes are currently running and they are related to the repair and reconstruction of public, educational establishments and building infrastructures and the repair of multifamily buildings is expected to start, too.

237 projects for over 500 million Leva introducing measures for energy efficiency have been funded: 58 contracts worth 105 million Leva directly related to energy efficiency have been signed and 61 projects worth 83 million Leva are in the waiting list. The activities funded under the Operational Program include energy, implementation of energy efficiency, heat insulation, replacement of windows, installations, gas supply, installation of systems using alternative renewable energy sources.
